Buryatia - a region with strong Budhist links - is establishing a 'biopharmaceutical' group in the next five years centred on capital Ulan-Ude.

The Buryat Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is well known for its research into Tibetan medicines. It has one of the world's largest collections of books on Tibetan cures.

Locals see a major market for the medicines in Russia and abroad.

The group will tap the resources of universities, businesses and 'innovative small enterprises' in the $3 billion, say reports.

Buryatia - larger than Italy or the UK - borders Lake Baikal and Mongolia.
